Nursery the first 2 weeks!

WELCOME TO OUR NURSERY BLOG

Through our central idea:  ‘Schools are organized for us to learn and develop’  our  focal point of the first two weeks  has been to help the children feel comforatable and secure in their new school environment, as this may be their first experience within a school structure. Bravely separating from mum, dad or a caretaker isn’t easy but the children are drawn into the classroom by new friendships and inviting activites such as: painting at the wall easel, a home corner complete with a kitchen and babies that need care and a cozy corner with pillows where they can look at their photo albums and other books. The children are developing independence as they put their belongings away and take care of themselves.  They are curious about each other and are finding friends with whom to play.  Already, in the garden we have noted cooperation as two girls on the tricycle went round twice and then handed it over to two other eager children ready to pedal.
A GOOD START to developing a helpful Nursery community.

Language Arts
What does Nursery’s language arts sound like in these first weeks of school? We teachers are speaking English, while different children are replying in English, Italian and Mandarin Chinese.  One child mentioned to us that she also speaks, French and Russian, (besides English and Italian). A little boy looked curiously at his teacher speaking English and then tried to imitate the words.
Learning each others names and the names of the teachers involved in their daily acitivites is done through song, rhyme and repitition during circle time, while lining up and with teacher support.
What does language arts look like early on?  Glimpsing around the room, there is a group of  children  with Ms. Jen drawing a self portrait, after having a look in the mirror. There is another set of children preparing their portfolio cover, using water colors to frame their photographs,  yet another set of children are in the book corner sharing their home to school books full of family photographs.  THANK YOU PARENTS FOR CREATING THESE LOVELY BOOKS and returning them to the Nursery classroom.

Maths
Nursery is counting and looking at the numbers that are everywhere in the environment.  The ‘number rock song’ and counting how many children in line take us all the way to 18 and beyond. While playing with magnetic boards, some children were able to recognize number symbols randomly, "eight, two, five". A boy in our class touched and counted the cars he was playing with, uno, due, tre, quattro…

The Nursery children will continue to count, and build math vocabulary especially position names - up, down, in, out  as they move around the school.

Home connections

Your child has so many names and places to learn and match in  their BIG school.
You can help your child match names to faces in their “ My School Book” that was sent home.
Look at the book together and see if they can tell you who their teachers are!  Ask him/her if the class is upstairs or downstairs, inside or outside.
